Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 11-17 December

Here's what Letizia wore from 11-17 December:

  1. Attending a lunch at the palace, 13 December.
  2. At a ceremony for the Prince of Girona Foundation, 14 December. Again with the strangely matched shoes. Why?
We also got a glimpse of the family's Christmas card this week, prepare your awwws:

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 27 November - 3 December

Here's what Letizia wore from 27 November - 3 December:

    1. Attending an awards dinner, 29 November. A classic repeated Letizia LBD. Can't go wrong.
    2. a) and b) At the XIVth State Congress of the Voluntary work, 1 December. Mmm...maybe we should've left the scarf on, I'm thinking.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 20-26 November

Here's what Letizia wore from 20-26 November:

    1. At the farewell ceremony before departing for an official visit to Chile, 21 November.
    2. In Chile, day 1, 22 November. Hey, I'm just happy any time she goes with red.
    3. Still on day 1, 22 November, in Felipe Varela. Now, see, this is the kind of thing that only Letizia could pull off. Lurve.
    4. Official dinner, 22 November. This is a chic little outfit...but, urgh. Maybe sleeves are better. Not exactly flattering on the upper body.
    5. Day 2, 23 November. Another cute little white number that's just childlike enough only she could handle it.
    6. Still day 2, 23 November, and the much worn navy suit has returned.
    7. Day 3, 24 November, prepped and ready for a Chilean safari...or something.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 6-12 November

Here's what Letizia wore from 6-12 November:

    1. Visiting an international tourism fair in London, 7 November.
    2. At a gala dinner put on by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in London, 7 November, repeating one of my very favorite Letizia looks! Huzzah.
    3. Attending an event for the ONCE Foundation, 11 November. Hey, a whole week of some of my favorite Letizia dresses (they're all Felipe Varela, by the way)! It's like a little present.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 16-22 October

Here's what Letizia wore from 16-22 October:

    1. Inaugurating the Miguel Delibes Foundation, 17 October. Wee stars on the top there. Bordering on kitschy, but she pulls it off.
    2. a and b) Audiences at the Reconquista Hotel in Oviedo, 20 October. All very elegant, and the snakeskin shoes are back!
    3. At a concert in Oviedo, 20 October. Ah, the lady tux. Kudos for bringing the hairdresser along for the trip, even if she does look a bit like she's late for a set with Frank and the boys at the Excelsior.
    4. Audiences for the Prince of Asturias Awards laureates, 21 October. Dubious shoe selection, I must say.
    5. The Prince of Asturias Awards, 21 October. I should LOVE this one - I mean, look, she did her hair and everything! Fellow royals, take note! - but somehow I find it aging. I blame the non-color color of it.
    6. Visiting San Tirso de Abres, 22 October. A low key end to the week, but yet again I am impressed overall. Me thinks Leti is stepping up her game, and I like it.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 9-15 October

Here's what Letizia wore from 9-15 October:

    1. Meeting with World Heritage leaders, 10 October. Some of you said you got a bad 1970s flashback from this, but I actually like it. I may be swayed by my current state of fall pumpkin baked goods bliss.
    2. National Day, 12 October.
    3. Opening a technology fair, 13 October. National Day is still my favorite of the week, but even this more casual look isn't bothering me as much as her usual cardigan looks do.
    4. In Barcelona visiting an exhibition and attending an awards ceremony, 15 October. A great repeated cocktail dress, and a super cute picture. Directly in competition with one other for Cutest Letizia Picture of the Week:
You think they're making her explain why she left her crown at home?

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 25 September-1 October

Here's what Letizia wore from 25 September - 1 October:

    1. Opening the Basque Culinary Center, 26 September. Elegant. Crisp clean white is ages better than a gray or beige suit!
    2. Opening a seminar on language and journalism, 28 September. Little jumbled, but that orange bag is adding a needed pop.
    3. Attending an awards presentation for the Spanish Foundation Against Cancer, 30 September. Lovely, and I think someone got a haircut.
    4. Opening "VIIth National Congress Scientist - Relatives MPS Spain", 1 October. The cardi makes this quite casual, but she's doing so much color experimentation - for the whole week, really - that I'm a happy camper. Delightful.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 14-20 August

Here's what Letizia wore from 14-20 August:

    1. Meeting Pope Benedict XVI at Zarzuela Palace in Felipe Varela, 19 August. "Everybody in your Sunday best, the Pope's in the house! And he's rocking some serious shoes..." Queen Sofia wins this appearance in her cheery yellow suit, no? (Apart from the kids, of course. That's not fair competition.)

    2. Attending a prayer vigil during the Pope's visit for World Youth Day, 20 August. Finally, a perfect occasion for her business casual princess style! She looked a step up but not uncomfortably out of place amongst loads of kids in polo shirts. Love it.

Also: Queen Sofia may have won the day with the Pope, but wee Sofia won her fair share of bonus points for being 4 and not pretending like she particularly cares, basically.
Another awesome kid to add to the Isabella collection. Royal watching's going to be downright entertaining in a decade or two, isn't it?

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 19-25 June

Here's what Letizia wore from 19-25 June:

    1. At a meeting for the Prince of Girona Foundation, 21 June a) the Zara dress, and b) the purse. This is a cute little dress, but I think one of the girls accidentally had a craft hour with that bag...
    2. Attending a dinner, 21 June.
    3. At the opening of the Foro Impulsa conference, 22 June. The blue suit is back (again), but at least she shook up the top she wore it with this time, I guess?
    4. Awarding the IMPULSA Prizes, 22 June. Now here's a repeat I can get behind! Viva la mod Mango dress!

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 5-11 June

Here's what Letizia wore from 5-11 June:

    1. Attending a lunch for the Governor-General of Australia, 7 June. The orange returns!
    2. Visiting the Senate and presenting a journalism award, 8 June, a) on Letizia, b) from Ailanto, and c) a view of the purse, which seems to have some sort of neon geological formation stuck to it.
    3. Holding a meeting for the Prince of Asturias Foundation, 9 June. A week of color and prints and skirts? Be still my heart. Well done, Leti.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 29 May - 4 June

Here's what Letizia wore from 29 May - 4 June:

    1. Armed Forces Day 2011, 29 May. I'm a sucker for Letizia in red.
    2. Audiences at Zarzuela Palace, 30 May. Those shoes are kinda fierce, no? You know I love that...even when I don't quite get the whole outfit combination.
    3. Attending a tribute to the Kings of Navarra, 31 May. Wearing a nice new suit and those Paco Gil shoes that I gushed all over when she arrived in London for William and Kate's wedding.
    4. At the Prince of Viana 2011 awards ceremony, 31 May.
    5. Attending a meeting in Madrid, 2 June. This is very basic, very Letizia, but very well put together. Love the all the different blues she's paired, and I LOVE her hair like that - so soft and pretty.
    6. Visiting an exhibition, 3 June. She lost the jacket for a dinner later that same day, making her a perfect match to Crown Princess Mary.
    7. Visiting King Juan Carlos in the hospital, 4 June. Cute style, but more importantly a cute smile - precisely what you want to see when someone's leaving a hospital!
Best and Worst of the Week
A very good week in Letizia Land, right? I had to go with the red for the best, because I am Team MORE RED. Plus, it gave me a chance to include her officer/gentleman Felipe, and as you know I am also on Team MORE MEN IN UNIFORM. The fringe on the shirt from #2 made my worst, because I couldn't decide if the fringe made it better or worse than just a regular, boring old button-down affair...and frankly, button-down shirts shouldn't require so much pondering. How about you?

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 24-30 April

Here's what Letizia wore from 24-30 April:

    1.  Easter in Mallorca, 24 April.
    2. Lunch with Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser at the beginning of their state visit, 25 April. Ugh, you guys, I'm such a broken record, but check out the group photo: so under dressed! It's not like anyone can compete with the glorious Mozah and her couture, but even with the Queen and Cristina...bah. It's all the cardigan's fault.
    3. Gala dinner for the state visit, 25 April. Now we're talking: this is one of my all-time Letizia favorites. So glad to see it make a reappearance, and with fierce hair to boot.
    4. A lunch at the royal palace, 26 April. We're going to see this dress a lot this year, apparently. That's alright; it's in living color, and I like it.
    5. Arriving in London, 28 April. I like everything here, too, from the aviator shades to the hot shoes.
    6. Attending the pre-wedding dinner in advance of the royal wedding, 28 April. Two good evening looks in a week - Letizia's on a roll.
    7. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding, 29 April.

Best and Worst of the Week
It's a case of the almost over dressed versus the critically under dressed, and the over dressed will always win. A Princess turn at a Princess event wins the week for me, while the casual wear during a state visit loses out.

What was your favorite (and least favorite) Letizia outfit this week?

Royal Fashion Awards: The Pre-Wedding Dinner

Well, this is a delectable little treat: Lady Elizabeth Anson hosted a pre-wedding dinner for the royals in town for William and Kate's wedding, and we actually got some good pictures!  (Well, not of everybody - yet - but we'll get to that. And many thanks to my twitter friends Alpa and liltinglimes for help in finding some of these ladies!)

So many of these ladies really turned it out tonight. Let's give out some awards, shall we?

    Best in Black
    Princess Eugenie
Left to Right: Princess Eugenie of York; Julia Ogilvy; Zara Phillips
Black may be a safe choice, but it makes it easy to get it dead right, and these three ladies are living proof. I had trouble naming a winner; Julia is purely elegant, and Zara's hair and shoes are fantastic. In the end, if only because I haven't seen a great Zara pic yet, Eugenie wins the day. Not just because of the dress, but because this is Vivienne Westwood. MORE VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, please. Talk about a designer that can dress a figure like Eug's and keep it fresh and young. Love.

    Best in Back
    Crown Princess Pavlos
L to R: Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess Pavlos of Greece (front and back); Tatiana, Princess Nikolaos of Greece & Denmark (front and back)
These two gowns, lovely though they may be, seem as safe as a black gown...until they turn. Surprise! Marie-Chantal's got a ribbon tail that may just be the remainder of a game of pin the tail on the donkey with her five kids, and Tatiana's got sparkles, all the way down. Good thing M-C's gown is amazing enough from the front to still run away with the category.

    Best in Fire
    Crown Princess Victoria
L to R: Princess Mathilde of Belgium; Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg; Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden; Queen Sonja of Norway; Princess Michael of Kent
So many ladies feeling the warm colors this evening, like it's Fall and not Spring. Not that I'm complaining: they're looking good. Mathilde always looks good in orange, though I wish she'd quit with the bridesmaid shoes. It's a wedding, darling, but you're not actually in it. Very similar silhouette to Princess Michael, and very flattering for them both. Also in bright construction colors: Sonja, who basically owns this same dress in every traffic light color on the block. And that's fine, but it's a little harlot with the lips and flower, no? Much better is Maria Teresa in her Elie Saab, which is actually giving her a waist and not making her carry a wrap over her arms. But the one I love best is Victoria, who is in Escada. Victoria in a strong color and a fierce hairdo: that's all I need.

    Best in Blue and Traditional
    Princess Alexandra
L to R: Queen Elizabeth II; the Queen of Brunei; Queen Anne-Marie of Greece; Princess Alexandra of Kent; Princess Anne, the Princess Royal; Queen Margrethe II of Denmark; Queen Sofia of Spain
Loads of ladies opted for the print/blue/bronze territory. All the Queens look good: I mean, this is about as typical as you get for all of them. Princess Anne's got a fantastic figure, no doubt, and she would have made my best for the night if I wasn't so thoroughly disturbed by her cleavage. It's just...I wasn't prepared for that. Feeling a little scarred. Good thing Princess Alexandra, adorable like a basket of kittens, is around to sooth me. She wins.

    Best in Easter Egg
    Autumn Phillips
L to R: Crown Princess Katherine of Yugoslavia; Autumn Phillips; (top) Katharine, the Duchess of Kent; (bottom) Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand
We're close enough to Easter to justify dressing like an Easter egg yet, aren't we? If we're not, don't tell these ladies. Though you know I love purple (and a gleeful Duchess of Kent), I'm giving this one to Autumn, simply for working it so soon after having a little one.

    Best of the Not Pictured
    Lady Gabriella Windsor
L to R: Lady Davina Lewis; Sophie, Lady Frederick Windsor; Lady Gabriella Windsor
I'm still scouting out photos of some of the royals we're missing, but we have a few quick glimpses of these ladies. Davina's quite cute in her fur. I'm really not liking what I've seen so far of Sophie Winkleman (also see here- yeesh, the hair), so I'll give it Lady Gabriella.

    Best in Princess
    Princess Letizia
L to R: Charlene Wittstock, Princess Letizia from the front and side, and Princess Beatrice
Ah, now we're talking, right? Don't you just love it when princesses (and princesses-to-be) actually dress up like, well, princesses? I love Charlene's bit of fluff, she's a tall drink of water and she can wear it. Beatrice, on the other hand, has bitten off a little more than she can chew, but it certainly does show off that body. And you always have to award points for that. It's Letizia, though, that was the star of the show tonight. This is just one giant princess-gasm, no? This Felipe Varela is perfect for black tie toned down as it is tonight, and it'll be even better repeated and iced up for a proper gala. Jumpy claps indeed.

    Best of the Worst
    The Countess of Wessex
L to R: Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall; Sophie, the Countess of Wessex
Well, Camilla didn't stay for the whole thing, which probably explains how utterly under dressed she is (though, if you're going to just throw something on from the closet, why not make it a gown?). Really, she's in this category because it felt too mean to Sophie to stick her here all on her own. The Countess is suffering from a broken rib, poor thing, but there's just no excusing this. Not the rat nest hair, not the too-deep plunge (please! Princess Anne already took care of that!), not the too short hem with the heels peeking out, and most of all: not the boob flaps. What the what? WHY? I just can't.

Who makes your best- and worst-dressed of the night?

And hey, if you see better pics (or anyone we're missing), let me know!

    UPDATES
More pictures have arrived! Let's feast:

First, royals that we now have better pictures for.
L to R: Lady Frederick Windsor, Lady Gabriella Windsor, the Duchess of Kent, Zara Phillips
Well, now that we can see Lady Frederick in all her bouffant glory, my final verdict is: no. Lady Gabriella’s not too bad, but there’s nothing fetching happening here either. Our new full-length picture of the Duchess of Kent shows sparkly shoes and a bag; I’m not sure I’ve seen so much glitter in combo with a cross necklace since Madonna’s naughty Catholic phase. And Zara’s face front pic proves that the hair and the shoes are the stars of the show; that sash-type sleeve isn’t doing her any favors.

    And now, brand new royals!
L  to R: the Duchess of Gloucester, the Countess of St. Andrews with Lady Amelia Windsor, and Lady Ameila full length, Lady Marina-Charlotte Windsor, Lady Nicholas Windsor, the wife of the King of Swaziland
At long last, the lovely Birgitte, Duchess  of Gloucester, has appeared. Too bad she’s chosen something designed to bring out her gray hair. She’s also suffering from print overload, as is the King of Swaziland’s wife over there on the right. Much simpler, and better, are the Countess of St. Andrews in her basic sheath and her daughters Amelia and Marina-Charlotte. Note Amelia’s pink shoes; note also that she is 15 years old, the exact age to at which to rock this deliciously mismatched outfit. Her 18-year-old sister Marina-Charlotte is looking much more grown up and absolutely stunning, right? Those must be some good genes. And the last of the Kent family to emerge in the late photos is Lady Nicholas Windsor, a.k.a. Paola. A lovely lady in an unfortunately short and overly-ruffled gown with a bird’s nest hairdo (there are braids in there, I think…) and shoes borrowed from Ginger Rogers’ last show. Oh well, the Kents can’t win ‘em all.

We also have Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco, sneaking by:
Looks like another caftan, probably lovely.

And then there's this lady that I recognized from the wedding, where it appeared that she was with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi (wife? daughter? eh?):
Though she seems to have come prepared to entertain the guests as part of a traveling black tie clown troupe.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 10-16 April

Here's what Letizia wore from 10-16 April:

    1. Arriving in Jerusalem at the start of an official visit to Israel and Palestine, 11 April. I'm torn. Two things I love: a crisp and professional white suit, and hot shoes. But...they don't go together. The suit's better for the occasion...but you know how I feel about shoes. Oh, conflict.
    2. At the welcome reception on the evening of Day 1, 11 April. Pretty dress and a little something different with the hair. I'll give it a passing grade!
    3. a) Visiting the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and b) arriving in Amman with added scarf, 12 April.12 April. Like the color, dubious on the stripes.
    4. At the Martyr Memorial Museum in Jordan, 13 April. Are the sleeves supposed to have that little flair that looks like they're just half pushed up, or are they actually just half pushed up and stuck there?
    5. Lunch with the King and Queen of Jordan and visiting a university, 13 April. Kind of like a pink version of that gray dress that I like, minus some frills. I wish the shoes were nude instead of an exact match, but that's a great color on a great dress.
    6. Last day in Jordan, 14 April. An oft-repeated outfit that I haven't changed my opinion on.
Best and Worst of the Week
It was a toss up between the evening dress and the new pink dress, but in the end the fancy hair and Jimmy Choos won out for best of the week. Worst was the navy suit, mostly because she's worn it so much in the past.

And we can't forget about Queen Rania:
I'm in from the knees to the shoulders. Don't get the opaque stockings or the two-tone pinkish shoes, and am terribly distracted by the hair. Not as sleek as usual for Rania, but very much a modern Queen, and that's a fact I can't complain about.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 27 March - 2 April

Here's what Letizia wore from 27 March - 2 April:

    1. Welcoming Charles and Camilla for their official visit to Spain, 30 March. The gray coat is back, and she's shaking it up with a different dress underneath (the actual matching dress this time) and a bare leg. See, I don't mind the repeating so much when you shake it up a little bit (even just a tiny bit).
    2. Gala dinner for Charles and Camilla, 30 March. It's red (which we love), it's a full skirt (which I love), and the hair's fantastic. So why don't I love this one fully and completely?
    3. Visiting a guide dog center with Camilla and then lunch with C & C and the King and Queen, 31 March. The dress of indeterminate color returns, and we can see that it is actually red. Very much enjoying the shoe change - give those platform pumps a rest!
    4. At the opening ceremony of a young entrepreneur's congress, 1 April. Looks like somebody's ready for summer, rocking a white suit already! Can't argue with that.
Best and Worst of the Week
Hmm. I like both of the red appearances (naturally), and I feel like I should be head over heels for the Lorenzo Caprile, but I'm not. Just too much going on there for my tastes - the texture on the skirt and the bodice are competing for my visual attention. (Best hair of the week, for sure, to be fair.) Nothing's really bad this week, either; can't complain about the gray or the white. How about you?

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 20-26 March

Here's what Letizia wore from 20-26 March:

    1. Vacation in London with the family. I like the hair up and back. Why don't we get to see it like that more often?
    2. Receiving the President of Ireland, 21 March. Ah, yes! The snakeskin shoes have returned! Along with a divine red suit. Love.
    3. Attending an awards ceremony, 22 March. Interesting combo here - the ruffled dress with the tweed jacket (both repeats). I think either one would be better off on its own.
    4. Audiences at Zarzuela Palace, 23 March. Meh. Safe.
    5. Visiting the Nestle factory in Girona, 25 March. I like the scarf - pink, vibrant - but I don't get it with the suit and the shoes. It's not making sartorial sense to me.
Best and Worst of the Week
Oh, this red suit is gooood. Great color (red's Letizia's color, isn't it?), perfect fit. It's professional and formal, but the detailing on the jacket and the high waist on the skirt keep it young. And the shoes! No complaints here, none. Easily the best of the week. Outfit 4, on the other hand...well, I don't really have any complaints but I don't have anything to say either. It loses the week on the basis of boredom.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 6-12 March

Here's what Letizia wore from 6-12 March:

    1. At the movies with Felipe and the girls. I do love a little boot-over-jean action.
    2. Lunch with the President of Chile, 7 March. It may be gray and black (which I think we can all agree we've seen too much of lately), but this is classy and appropriate.
    3. State dinner for the Chilean president, 7 March. The skirt is reused from a previous outing. Every time I look at this, something different bothers me. Today, it's where the skirt is sitting on her waist. A little too high, maybe.
    4. Visiting the Cervantes Institute during the state visit from Chile, 8 March. More gray and black, but again: classy and appropriate. And I really, really like the straight hair with the side part!
    5. Attending the Discapnet Awards, 10 March, a) with coat and b) without. Color! And pattern! And yet I like it, but don't love it. Meh.
    6. Audience with members of Tel Aviv University, 11 March. Oh, this again.
Best and Worst of the Week
Sad that my two favorites from this week are the gray and black ones, but it is what it is: outfits 2 and 4 are running close for best of the week for me, but the new hair from #4 tips it over the edge. Doesn't it make her look so much younger? Love it. Really, this was a pretty good week for Letizia. A little more dressed up than usual, which of course is what I'm always rooting for. But the end was a disappointing return to the norm, and thus it makes my worst of the week.

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 27 February - 5 March

Here's what Letizia wore from 27 February - 5 March:

    1. Attending the National Sports Awards, 28 February. Oh, no. A cropped version of my arch nemesis, the Hammer pants. And the shoes...oh, no.
    2. a) Visiting the Foundation for Persons with Disability of the Island of Menorca, 2 March, a) from the side for a view of how the trousers fit and c) arriving in the camel coat. Ugh, this week. It's like the Sisterhood of the Ill-Fitting Pants up in here.
    3. At the World of Rare Diseases Day, 3 March, a) arriving and b) inside. Important to note: here she is at last year's World of Rare Diseases Day. Déja vu! I'm sure she has no recollection of what she wore to what event the previous year, but the people she's visiting would certainly remember.
Best and Worst of the Week
Outfit 3 wins by default, doesn't it? SHOOTIES and repeats and all. And number 1 gets the worst, also by default. The shoes! Why?!

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 6-12 February

Here's what Princess Letizia wore the week of 6-12 February:

    1.  Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Prince Felipe taking his oath as Prince of Asturias, 8 February, a) outside with coat and b) inside without. I really think outfits #2 and #1 should have been swapped for formality's sake.
    2. Visiting the Cadena Cope radio station in Madrid, 9 February, a) outside and b) inside. Again? I seriously had to triple check and make sure this was a different event. If she wears this one again next week, I'm naming it worst no matter what else she sports, even though I like it.
    3. Greeting the German president and first lady, 10 February.
Best and Worst of the Week
I'm a sucker for purple. I like to think she knew she'd be featured in endless "style face-off" articles next to Bettina Wulff there, and she stepped up her regular gray just for the occasion. She didn't abandon it, no, that would have been too much to ask, but a dash of color does go a long way. The first outfit of the week, on the other hand just needed a dash of...something. A belt on the cardigan? A blazer instead? Just something to make her look less like a school teacher and more like a princess. Right?

Week in Review: Princess Letizia, 30 January - 5 February

Here's what Princess Letizia wore the week of 30 January - 5 February:

    1.  Audiences at Zarzuela Palace, 31 January. Bling on the cardigan? I like it. But not the oxford shoes, I'm afraid.
    2. Opening the European year for volunteering, 1 February, a) with coat and b) without.
    3. Visiting an education center in Madrid, 2 February, a) with coat and b) without. Update: eagle-eyed reader Alex points out this jacket is from Belstaff!
    4. Attending the Luz Casal concert, 4 February. SHOOTIES. Also, leather. Or pleather. Or both.
Best and Worst of the Week
Really, I'm naming Felipe worst of the week here. This is one awkward outfit. These two take on many different roles, but rock star should not be one of them. Trying too hard. I much prefer the gray.
