Flashback Friday: Readers' Best of 2010

Here we go! Your suggestions for additions to the Best of 2010 list. Ah. This is just what I needed after a week of Worsts and bores and SHOOTIES.

Princess Mathilde

I quite like that orange plaid number. My only hesitation comes from the addition of what appears to be orange shoes and orange earrings. A little matching goes a long way, methinks.

Princess Beatrice

Excellent leg showings, both. Though I did think that first number was better standing still, rather than in action trudging through the Ascot lawn.

Princess Letizia

With the exception of that SHOOTIE appearance (or booties, or whatever you want to call them - it's all fug to me) on the end there, I'm in agreement.

Crown Princess Mary

A true abundance of options. The floral Jackie O. inspired look from the Washington, D.C. visit very nearly topped my list too. Divided opinions, though, on the orange gown (and also on that brown jumpsuit...not for me, that).

Princess Máxima

That floral Valentino is a lot of dress: not many could pull it off, but she does. Someone mentioned the bicycle riding outfit, which was also worn departing on the train for Margrethe's birthday celebrations, and that got me thinking about this super Hollywood appearance from the train's arrival in Denmark. Chic!

Crown Princess Victoria

More excellent choices, particularly the Elie Saab. I don't care for those YSL shoes in the middle, but I think I'm alone on that.

The Complete Best of 2010

I've had so much fun reminiscing on all the things we loved this year, my friends. Most especially I've enjoyed reading your additions to my own personal favorites. You're never going to guess what I'm naming as the Best of 2010 for Victoria.





Wait for it....

Just kidding. Had to be done, really. Victoria had an excellent year, and I'm not just speaking sartorially. The wedding was the cap of it all, and thus the dress must take the prize.

Honorable Mentions

Now this is a princess with a plethora of 2010 options for me to choose from, but I'm stopping with my top two. (And wouldn't you know - they're both Elie Saab.) I don't need to search any further; I've got all the drooling wonderfulness I need right here. How about you?

Best of 2010: Princess Máxima

I'm so glad Beatrix, Máxima, and Willem-Alexander busted out their royal train and braved their way through the volcanic travel disaster to make to Queen Margrethe's birthday celebrations. If they hadn't, I would have been without one of my favorite Máxima appearances of all time:

That's right, I said of all time - not just 2010. Serious business, that. This is a lot of dress, with that busy print, but she's got a lot of personality so she can pull it off. And it's a superb match to the tiara, so double win.

Honorable Mentions

There were a lot of dishevelled appearances, and a lot of dodgy colors of tights and shoes in the Netherlands in 2010. Any nice, pulled together appearance became a candidate for an honorable mention. A ladylike appearance on royal duty, an J.Crew catalog imitation in Stockholm, and an outing with hair neatly pulled back (finally!) all made my list.

Best of 2010: Grand Duchess Maria Teresa

I'm about to gush about my love for Elie Saab gowns. Prepare yourselves:

J'adore! This is delicate. I love this gown because it flatters Maria Teresa's body type, and covers her up so that she doesn't have to stick with a shawl for the whole event, as she is prone to do. And, hello, talk about coming out with your tiara guns blazing. Some people said it was too much, this tiara for this event, but oh how I disagree. Too many diamonds is a condition similar to that of too much chocolate: it doesn't exist in my world.

Honorable Mentions

Another thing you can never get too much of? Elie Saab gowns! (Don't say I didn't warn you about the gushing.) Here's two more: periwinkle at Margrethe's birthday (again, like what's happening with sleeves here) and gorgeous deep blue for National Day. This is what I'm talking about, with the wrap, but the color is so lush I'll give it an honorable mention anyways. I also loved this suit from National Day: very flattering.

Best of 2010: Princess Letizia

I'm pretty hard on Letizia, week-to-week. But that just means I get extra excited when she busts out something I love. Case in point:

So excited I gave it a gold star, and now I'm giving it the Best of 2010 title. I know a lot of you don't share the love for this look, so you better nominate your own in the comments!

Honorable Mentions

Looking through the Year in Letizia, I found myself tempted to honorably mention anything with a bit of color, but as you can see, I've restrained myself. I loved the red velvet appearance at a military parade (a reworking of an earlier outfit) - that's a hard dress code to abide by, so good appearances get extra credit. Also loved well-fit dresses in both repeated green and classic white, and the blue gown from Nikolaos and Tatiana's wedding. And now I'm crossing my fingers that we'll see a more colorful 2011 from Letizia.

Best of 2010: Princess Madeleine

Madeleine's another one I had trouble with. She's a gorgeous girl with a tendency to wear prom dresses for fancy occasions. Lots of fluff. This dress, though:

Proof positive that you don't need fluff to make a stellar impression. This repeated Oscar de la Renta will always, always win in my books. Let's see it again in 2011, okay?

Honorable Mentions

I know a lot of people weren't fans of the shorter trousers Madeleine wore on royal duty in 2010, but I thought the whole look was wonderfully put together: the slight military detailing on the jacket is a great contrast to the feminine shirt and accessories. Also super feminine: this Angel Sanchez gown from Victoria's pre-wedding dinner and concert. A little too bridal? Yes. But she does look great. And she gets points for wearing a tiara on a non-tiara occasion by sporting the modern fringe tiara as a necklace. You know sneaky bling will always hold a place in my magpie heart.

Best of 2010: Crown Princess Mary

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

I was all set to name one of Mary's tiara-toting gala appearances the best of the year, and then I stumbled back on this appearance:

Love. You don't always need a tiara on top for an ensemble to scream "Princess". This is flattering and oh-so ladylike, and it's my favorite Mary appearance of 2010.

Honorable Mentions

Naturally, the tiara appearances need some love here, so I'll dole out honorable mentions to the three events of Queen Margrethe's birthday. The repeated red dress was the one that I previously suspected would be my best of the year: I just love that dress. It's something about the way the waist, neckline and sleeves come together. The new white dress was typical Mary, and the teal was yet another repeat from her Greatest Hits. A fantastic three days for the future Queen of Denmark.

Best of 2010: Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

As I said, some of these royals had a whole lot of choices for their best outfits of the year, and some did not. Beatrice and Eugenie did not. Just a parade of short and shorter skirts, really. Such, I suppose, is the peril of balancing your fun-loving university life with that big ol' title in front of your name. Here's what I loved in 2010:

Why are these two outfits my favorites of the year? Because I think they were successful mixings of the personal club-going style of these two ladies and occasion-appropriateness. Eugenie's showing at Sandringham for A Very Royal Christmas 2010 was fantastic, I thought: the coat's the right length but it has great style, as does the slightly funky hat. And I loved Beatrice at Royal Ascot - the flapper-esque dress was a fresh take on the traditional dress + jacket combo.

Honorable Mentions

Eugenie gets an honorable mention just for wearing a longer skirt - and at a club, even! - while Beatrice's summer holiday dress is fresh, crisp, and flattering.

Best of 2010: Princess Nikolaos

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

Ah! Tatiana's one of my favorites, I make no secret of that. Why do I love her so? This:

Perfect, perfect turn at Crown Princess Victoria's wedding. I like this one better than what she wore to her own wedding. Sometimes things are just pretty.

Honorable Mentions

I'm not even giving the wedding dress an honorable mention, can you believe that? It's sacrilegious, isn't it? I just didn't like it that much, and it hasn't grown on me. These three appearances, however, have certainly grown in favor, particularly the green Amanda Wakeley sported at King Constantine's birthday party; I like it more now than I did when I first saw it. One of the things I like about Tatiana is her casual style, so I had to throw in one of the outfits she wore mucking about Greece before the wedding, as well as the Grecian dream of a dress she wore to her pre-wedding party.

Best of 2010: Charlene Wittstock

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

Oh, I'm torn. I can't decide whether I like Charlene or not. (Fashion-wise, I mean. This is not a personality discussion.) She'll stun in one turn, and then retreat to a month of appearances in nothing but black. Even the stunner appearances tend to be neutrals, which is bound to get old. I shall reserve my final judgment until after the wedding, but you know I'm always rooting for a new star on the royal fashion scene. Until then, I take comfort in a few of those fabulous showings:

Honorable Mentions

Hard to find honorable mentions for this future princess (see: the above complaint about all the black outfits). But I did adore this simple white appearance at the Asprey World Cup - great for a polo match. And, even though it's another beige dress, her appearance at Victoria's wedding was very well put together.

Best of 2010: Princess Mathilde

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

Some of these royals were filled with an abundance of options for me to pick from, and some were not. As much as I adore Princess Mathilde, she was one of the ladies that did not have a bountiful sartorial year. Lots of awkward Natan turns. But I will always adore this dress:

This repeated Armani is lovely, and this is one of the occasions on which her whole look - jewelry, hair, accessories, dress - played together nicely. I hope we see it again in 2011!

Honorable Mentions

Mathilde put in two pretty in pink appearances at Victoria's wedding - in one of the only Natan outfits I liked this year, and then again in Armani Privé. Plus, I had to pick a casual outfit: it just seems so much more who Mathilde really is than the overly glam stuff. This well-coordinated mom-on-the-go outfit was a great choice for a playground visit.

Best of 2010: Crown Princess Mette-Marit

This week I'm picking out my favorite outfit worn by each of the royals I've covered regularly here on the blog. Join in the fun!

Crown Princess Mette-Marit had a year filled with a lot of neutral, rather boring outfits. Thank goodness she threw in some glamorous turns and a whole lot of killer shoes to liven the party up. The most glamorous of all:

As though the Valentino dress and feathery bag weren't glam enough on their own, she wears the whole thing while alighting from a private yacht. Gorgeous, and my absolute 2010 favorite from the future Queen of Norway.

Honorable Mentions

Honestly, most any occasion in which M-M wore a splash of color could have warranted an honorable mention, but I picked a few other favorites just for fun: the yellow Valentino is a fantastic pop of sunshine, and the blue cloud of a dress from Victoria's wedding is topped by one of my favorite tiaras. Of the many, many tiered ruffle dresses Mette-Marit sported this year, this purple one is my favorite, followed by the unique color combination worn for Queen Margrethe's birthday.
